Bizarre

Gopher Mambo - Yma Sumac

First time I saw it in Ohad Naharin's "Anaphase" for the Bat Sheva Dance Company when I was twelve - performed (lip-synced) by an apparition by the name of Ebony Williams: half Indian and half African, standing on stilts, made up like a drag queen, in a thong framing a marvelous muscular behind. The second time, in the Cirque du Soleil's Quedam (on DVD). You can find the CDC act on YouTube, but it pales in comparison to the Naharin act, at least as I experienced it.

Yma Sumac (who recently passed away) was a Peruvian diva whose voice spanned 5 octaves. I've been searching for this song for years! Finally contacted somebody from Bat Sheva dance company who happily gave me the above info.

Hi Gittit,

I owe you and Ido a big thank you for introducing me to Caetano Veloso. I don't know Brazilian so I don't know what his singing about in the majority of his songs, but that is part of the attraction of his music (to me). It could be the most beautiful poetry ever heard or it could be mediocre.
Since coming back from a holiday in Italy I've been trying to find some Italian folk/traditional music, I thought contemporary music was pretty funny, do you happen to know any?

I hope you don't mind me asking. What level of school are you in (high school, university/college, etc)? It is nice to see other young people interested in health and exercise, the actual science of them not just low-fat.

All the best,
Ed

Hey Ed! Thanks for posting. Anyone who likes Caetano Veloso is all right in my book =)
Actually several of his albums were created in his "exile" in the UK and are mostly in English. "Transa" is one.

Italian music hmmm... Have you ever listened to Gregorian chant? It's liturgical music from the 13-14th centuries. Very odd-sounding to the Western-trained ear. I don't know enough music theory to explain why, but it's awesome if you're in a certain mood. Just BEWARE of "Gregorian" renditions of pop music. It is AWFUL! Look for the Schola of the Hofburgkapelle, Vienna - that is the CD I have.

In answer to your second question, I'm a first year BA student (psychology/biology) and I'm 26 years old. Yeah it's hard to find people willing to depart from the dogma they read in newspapers. I'm lucky I had a good teacher ;)

Let me know what music you find!

Hi again,

Sorry for the delayed response, you know how school gets (not to mention life). I did a bit of youtubing and wikipediaring of Gregorian Chant. It is a different sound, nice and laxed. Good for a slow tempoed workout as well as for just chilling out. I think I may have actually heard some Gregorian Chant in Italy, we went to Christmas eve mass at San Marco's (In Venice). Then again it could have just as well been general/regular hymns!

I have quite a similar music listening style to you. I can listen to a song for a week non-stop (think Viva la vida) or once in a blue moon and not want to hear it again for a year. I've been getting into the Elvis lately, as well as some Johnny Cash and of course the ever popular Cat Stevens.

Ed
P.S I've only seen two Caetano Veloso Cd's in store, one in Munich and his antologia in Venice, it's hard to find his CD's in Australia.
P.P.S Thanks for your help
